Five public library branches near Toronto's university and college campuses will stay open until midnight from mid-November, the library board confirmed after a vote this week.
The six-week pilot keeps study rooms, Wi-Fi and printers available during exam season. Staff will be on hand until closing, and students can pick up a free late-night transit ticket at the desk.
Board documents put the cost at about $180,000, paid from a reserve set aside for service trials. The board will look at visit counts and a short survey before deciding whether to repeat it in spring.
Students' unions had asked for longer hours for two years, pointing to crowded cafés and campus spaces that close at 11 p.m.
