Crews on the Rideau Canal are testing sensors that measure ice thickness every hour, a change that could open the skateway days sooner in a warming climate.

The skateway needs about 30 centimetres of ice before it can open. Until now crews drilled test holes by hand every morning. Recent winters have seen short and late seasons.
