Halifax Transit will add a 6 a.m. ferry crossing between Dartmouth and downtown Halifax starting Monday, an hour earlier than the current first sailing.

A rider survey this summer found that hospital, port and hotel workers starting at 7 a.m. had no way across the harbour except by car or a long bus trip over the bridge.

The extra crossing will run on weekdays for a year. The agency will count riders each month and report back to the transit committee in the spring.
